Great SMS copy is not about creativity — it is about clarity. Nigerian consumers respond to messages that are immediately clear, genuinely valuable, and specific about what action to take. Here is how to write messages that convert.
The Formula: Hook + Value + Action
Every high-converting Nigerian SMS follows this formula. The hook grabs attention immediately (often a number or a name). The value explains why the reader should care. The action tells them exactly what to do next. "20% off ALL items today only at Shoprite Ikeja. Show this SMS at checkout. Valid until 8pm."
Use Numbers, Not Vague Qualifiers
"20% off" performs better than "massive discount". "Save ₦5,000" performs better than "great savings". "Only 3 spots left" performs better than "limited availability". Specific numbers are credible and create clear mental pictures of value.
Create Genuine Urgency
Fake urgency ("Act now!" with no real deadline) is recognised and ignored by Nigerian consumers. Real urgency — a genuine deadline, limited stock, or time-limited offer — creates authentic motivation to act. "Flash sale ends tonight at midnight" is compelling because it is real and specific.
Avoid SMS Jargon and Abbreviations
While brevity matters, abbreviations that reduce clarity hurt performance. "Gt 30% off ur nxt purch" is harder to read than "Get 30% off your next purchase" and takes the same number of characters. Prioritise clarity over compression.
End with an Opt-Out Line
"Reply STOP to unsubscribe" is both a legal requirement and good practice. While it takes characters, it builds trust and reduces spam complaints that can damage your sender reputation with Nigerian carriers.
